Your team lead points at the roadmap, sweeps an arm across it and says "we're surrounded by opportunities". You nod. Privately you count four abandoned projects and a login page that still doesn't work on Safari.

You find a single lost sock in the wash and feel nothing. Then you find another one. Then you open the drawer and realise the socks have been leaving for years, and nobody has been told.

A friend gestures at the pub, full of people talking over each other, and says "this is the problem with everyone". You look at the group chat on your phone, where eleven people are arguing about a bin rota.

You spend one afternoon on a comment section and come away with a firm belief that the whole internet is run by people who have never once read the article. Then you reply without reading the article.

Why it caught on: the picture is a still from Pixar's *Toy Story* (1995), showing Woody and Buzz Lightyear, with Buzz sweeping his arm out as if presenting something vast. It began as "X, X everywhere", the template that gave the world "Buzz and Woody", and people filled it with whatever they felt was suddenly all around them: idiots, in many of the best-known captions, or a future, or a meteor. It spread because the gesture fits any complaint, and the second line can always be the same word as the first.
