Why it caught on: the arms are a painted version of the clasped, flexed-muscle handshake between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers in the 1987 film *Predator*, where their characters greet each other like old comrades. People turned it into a template for two different sides, each named on one arm, agreeing on one shared thing. It spread because it fits any pairing, from the unlikely to the very obvious.
