Your phone's camera roll hits "storage almost full". You open it, expecting a few hundred blurry photos, and find four thousand screenshots of other screenshots. They are everywhere, and none of them are going anywhere.

You open a new tab to check one thing. Then you check the tab bar. Eleven tabs, three of them the same recipe, one of them playing music from somewhere you cannot locate. It is tabs all the way down.

A colleague says "just a quick reply-all" and, within the hour, your inbox contains forty-one messages that say "thanks!" Every one of them has a signature with a logo, and every one of them is addressed to you.

You buy a red car and from that day see nothing but red cars. You learn a new word on Monday and by Wednesday it is in a podcast, an advert and your landlord's email. The world has been like this all along. You have only just started noticing.

Why it caught on: the picture is a cropped still of a woman with tousled blonde hair, looking at the camera through a purple haze and wearing black fingerless gloves, which was captioned in the "X, X everywhere" pattern borrowed from the Buzz Lightyear and Woody format from *Toy Story*. The template is easy to fill in: name anything that is suddenly all around you, say it twice, and the joke is done. People used it for everything from pixels to misused memes and bronies, and some of the more crude captions simply swapped in whatever annoyed them that week.
