Why it caught on: the picture shows a man in a flat cap and a rust-brown jacket, squinting in half-disgusted disbelief, and it was captioned in two lines: a "so you're telling me..." setup, then the contradiction it exposes. The face fits that rhythm perfectly, so the format spread to any hypocrisy people wanted to point out. Some captions leaned on the name in the title and went much darker, but the everyday ones are what travelled.
