The first week of January, and you already know how many days are left until Christmas. Nobody asked. You tell the whole office anyway, with a face that suggests it is good news.

A colleague mentions a mild interest in something, a podcast, a type of biscuit, a regional goat. By lunchtime you have declared it your favourite thing in the world. By Thursday you have forgotten it.

It's February and you have a basket of wrapping paper, a scented candle shaped like a pine cone and a list with "gifts" at the top. Everyone else is still trying to throw away the last of the tin of chocolates. You are not behind. You are early, and you are insufferable.

Something small happens on a Friday: a bank holiday, a cancelled meeting, a new variant of something. Within seconds you are counting down to the one date that matters. Whatever else is going on, Christmas is closer than it was.

Why it caught on: the picture shows Buddy, the human raised as an elf in the 2003 film *Elf*, played by Will Ferrell, in his green outfit with a white fur collar and an enormous grin. The film became a Christmas staple, and Buddy's relentless, wide-eyed cheer (including his line about smiling being his favourite) was easy to borrow for any announcement of delight. It spread because the template fits two jokes at once: a Christmas countdown that arrives far too early, and a sudden declaration of love for something random.
