The group chat has been on read for nine days. You sent a simple question about Saturday, with a time and an address, and the only reply is a thumbs-up from someone who wasn't invited.

Rush hour, a roundabout, and the car in front takes it with no indicator whatsoever. You indicate for everything, including parking. Nobody has ever thanked you, and you've started to suspect nobody has noticed.

Someone at work writes "your welcome" in an email to the whole department. You open a reply, close it, and open it again. You sit there for ten minutes, a small and quiet crusader who in the end sends nothing.

Your friend announces that their twenties are for "finding yourself", then spends the whole evening on a dating app. You nod, you finish your drink, and you decide this is a conversation for another decade.

Why it caught on: the picture shows the Dude, played by Jeff Bridges in the Coen brothers' 1998 film *The Big Lebowski*, in his cream patterned cardigan. The film became a cult favourite, and its lines turned into everyday phrases. People put the Dude's face on "that's just your opinion, man" and on the "am I the only one around here" rant, which in the film belongs to his friend Walter. The format took off because everyone has a small, petty grievance that feels enormous when nobody else seems to share it.
