Letter of the day arrives, and you already know how it will go. Someone in the group chat posts a proud, wholesome, perfectly formed sentence, and someone else adds one word that drags it somewhere it was never meant to go.

A colleague's birthday card is passed round the office. It is a cheerful yellow thing, and by the time it reaches you it contains three "HBD"s, one "Uncle Aaron", and a joke only two people understand.

Someone announces a winner, a promotion, a free biscuit. A mate in the corner shouts "winning!" at a volume the occasion did not need. The room carries on regardless.

You sit through a quiz round that asks which one of these things is not like the other. Four people at your table answer at once. All four are certain, and no two agree.

Why it caught on: the picture shows Big Bird, the tall yellow bird from the children's programme Sesame Street, waving cheerfully. It became an image macro for the old "letter of the day" format, where the gentle, educational tone is set up and then wrecked by a rude, political or absurdly long word. It spread because the character is so innocent that any twist lands harder, and the same wave of captions also took in birthday greetings and "which one of these things" jokes.
