You say "sorry" for the third time in one minute: for the door, for the chair, for the fact that someone else bumped into you. A colleague, mid-sentence, finally loses patience. You apologise for that too.

Your younger cousin announces that his life is over because the Wi-Fi is down for ten minutes. He is twelve. He has a roof, a PlayStation and a packed lunch. Somebody in the room finally says it out loud.

The group chat is deep into an argument about the best shooter ever made, and one person types "Black Ops is the best" with total confidence. Within seconds a reply arrives about a 1997 N64 game, and the matter is closed.

Why it caught on: the picture is a panel from a 1960s Batman comic in which Batman slaps Robin across the face, taken out of its story and given new speech bubbles. The format is simple: the setup goes in Robin's mouth, the interruption in Batman's, and the slap is the punchline. It spread because almost everything can be improved by being cut short, and the colourful starburst background made it instantly recognisable as a template.
