Why it caught on: the picture is a still of Batman in the cowl from Christopher Nolan's Batman films, edited so his mouth hangs open in a slack, baffled grimace, set against a yellow, black and grey burst. It was used in the advice-animal style of the early 2010s, where a character's fixed expression carried a daft, blunt statement, and it spread because the captions could be either a dim remark or a plain mistake.
