Why it caught on: the picture shows a baby on a beach, scowling with determination and holding up a clenched fist covered in sand. It is usually known as Success Kid, and it spread around 2007 and onwards as a way to mark a small victory, with the top line setting up the win and the bottom line delivering it. It lasted because the victories people share are almost always tiny ones, and the face treats each of them as a triumph.
