The name points to Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, and people used the finger as the full stop on blunt opinions: jokes about Windows, programmers' pride in their own typing, and angry verdicts on whatever had annoyed the poster that week. It spread because the gesture needs no translation and the caption gets the last word.
