Why it caught on: the picture shows Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy, the moustached, burgundy-jacketed news anchor from the 2004 comedy *Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy*. His lines from the film, such as the Brazilian gigolos and the "I'm going to need you to..." speech, were made for birthday captions. People then added their own twists on ageing and passing years, and it spread because everyone is a year older every year.
