Your mum puts on a concert of her favourite old rockers, and you wince at how ancient they look. She says that in twenty years your favourites will look exactly the same. You go quiet and try to picture it. You can't.

Your group is on hiatus, someone is doing military service, and the whole fandom is waiting. Your aunt asks what you are up to this evening. "Waiting" is the honest answer, and it is a hobby with no moving parts.

A song comes on in a shop, and one line in the chorus sounds exactly like the band you love. You are the only person in the queue who has heard it. You say nothing and hum along with great dignity.

You flip a label over and it says "made in Korea". That is all it takes. A perfectly ordinary pencil case is now the best thing you own, and you will not be taking questions.

Why it caught on: the picture shows a girl with a straight fringe making peace signs by her eyes, set on a bright rainbow background, in the style of the Advice Animals meme format. The Russian-language internet filled it with captions about K-pop fans, with idol groups such as SNSD and Shinee named in the posts. It spread because the stereotype was a young, wide-eyed, endlessly devoted fan who relates everything in life back to her idols, and because plenty of fans recognised the habit in themselves and joined in.
