Why it caught on: the picture shows a young man with a heavy-lidded, slightly glazed look and a lopsided smile, and it was captioned as "10 Guy" because he looked as though he had taken ten of whatever he was on. People used it for deliberately daft, half-profound one-liners, such as "bicycles are just acoustic motorcycles" and "liquid zoo", which needed no setup. It spread because the face does all the work: put any stray thought under it and it reads as a revelation.
