Your friend sends a photo of the new flat. "Spacious, light, quiet." You look at the price in the corner of the listing and make a face you will be making for the next twelve months. The cashier says "that'll be five pounds" for a single cookie. It's a good cookie. It is not a five pound cookie. You pay anyway and eat it slowly, out of spite. You agree to watch a horror film "just for the first half". Forty minutes in you are holding a cushion at chin height, one eye shut, narrating what you think is about to happen. You are right. It does not help. Someone explains the plan for the third time, and you nod with the confidence of a person who stopped listening in the first minute. Then they ask, "so, any questions?" Your face answers before you can. **Why it caught on:** the picture shows a camel looking straight at the camera with bulging, bloodshot-looking eyes, a crumpled muzzle and a few crooked teeth, set against a red and grey sunburst background. The picture was passed around as a reaction face and captioned in many languages, from Spanish and Italian to Russian, whether the joke was shock, madness or simply being unwell. It spread because the expression suits almost any feeling that is slightly too much.
