Someone asks if it's hot in here. It's August, the fan is broken, and the only window opens onto a bin. The question is not a question. It's a cry for help, and you have no answer for it. You ask for one small thing, say a coffee, and the person responsible for it goes vague. You stand there with your mug and your dignity. Somewhere in the building, a kettle is not being switched on. The fourth hour of an assignment you were certain would take twenty minutes. The formula has more letters than a ransom note, and none of them will behave. You have started talking to the page, and not kindly. Someone you've met once, at a barbecue, in 2019, offers an opinion on how you should have done it. You never asked. You didn't ask a single thing. And yet here is the advice, warm and unrequested, like a lukewarm sausage. **Why it caught on:** the picture is a close-up still of Samuel L. Jackson as Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction (1994), mid-shout. Its stern face and wide mouth suited any caption that ends in "one more goddamn time" or demands something of the reader, and the format needs only a short fuse and a big word on top. It spread because everyone has a small thing that suddenly makes them furious.
