A Darth Vader post.
Your uncle spends ten minutes at Christmas explaining how everyone at the table is related. By the end, your second cousin is also somehow your step-aunt's nephew. You nod with great authority and ask for more gravy. The pub quiz asks for a famous film line. You announce the answer with total confidence, and someone points out that's not what he says. You defend your version for the rest of the round. Someone has been saving a pun for three weeks. They wait for a natural opening, and none comes, so they build one. The groan around the table is exactly what they were after. The birthday card arrives from the one friend who still makes everything about the dark side. It's slightly menacing and entirely sincere. Your mum puts it on the mantelpiece. **Why it caught on:** the picture shows Darth Vader from *Star Wars*, standing in a dark corridor with his hands on his hips, a pose that suits any announcement. Vader first appeared in the 1977 film, and by the time image macros arrived he was already the most quoted villain around. People captioned him with puns, misremembered lines and the famous family reveal from *The Empire Strikes Back*. It spread because everyone knows Vader and everyone loves a groaner.
