Your birthday is in a fortnight, and you have already done the maths. Grandma sends a tenner, Auntie sends a card with a tenner, and the neighbour who barely knows you sends a fiver. Nobody has asked what you plan to do with it. Nobody needs to. You said you'd have one biscuit. You are now holding the second, looking the packet dead in the eye, and nobody saw a thing. The plan has been in motion since the kettle went on. Someone at the table says "I'm easy, whatever you fancy" about the restaurant. You name a place. They sigh. You knew that would happen, and you picked it anyway, because phase one was always about winning. At 11 pm you type out a spicy opinion about a film everyone liked, press post and put the phone face down. By morning you have replied to every disagreement with a single full stop. It was never about the film. **Why it caught on:** the picture shows a small child in a checked shirt, sitting on grass and scrunching their face into a gleeful, scheming grin, hands clasped together. People captioned it with small, petty acts of mischief, from pocketing birthday money to winning an argument online, and the grin fitted every one of them. It spread because nearly everyone has pulled off a harmless bit of villainy and felt exactly that smug about it.
