JIMMY FALLON / YOU ARE SYNTHETIC, ALARMINGLY UNPLEASANT, AND REPULSIVE TO MY EYES& EARS
A Psst spiderman post.
You ask the shop assistant if the item is in stock. He leans in, glances at the manager, and whispers that there's a whole pallet in the back, but you didn't hear it from him. At work, a colleague catches you at the coffee machine. Cupped hand, lowered voice: the restructure is happening on Thursday, nobody has been told, and you absolutely must act surprised. The group chat has gone quiet for an hour. Then a private message arrives: "Psst, did you see what she said?" You had not. You are now fully invested and entirely unproductive. Your mate hovers at the edge of the table at a wedding and murmurs that the best man is about to cry. You turn round to look. Everyone else does the same. Subtle work, all round. **Why it caught on:** the picture is a still from the 1967 Spider-Man cartoon, in which the hero peers round a wall with a hand cupped to his mouth, as if sharing a secret. The cartoon's stiff, oddly expressive frames were a gift to meme makers, who used the image for shady offers, spoilers and bad news delivered in a whisper, often with an innocent caption that turns sinister on the second line. It spread because anyone can say something awful in a stage whisper and make it funnier.
