WAITING FOR gun-control to work in chicago
A Still Waiting post.
You told them you'd be there at eight. It is now twenty to nine, and you have read the same three lines of a menu so many times you could recite them. The waiter has stopped asking if you'd like anything while you wait. The exam results were due "by the end of the week". That was a fortnight ago. You refresh the portal, then refresh it again, as if the first time was a misunderstanding. You sent the message at breakfast. Two blue ticks by lunch, no reply by dinner. You check anyway, in case the phone has been keeping something from you. The parcel says "out for delivery" at 7 am. By 6 pm you have lived the full arc of hope, bargaining and quiet acceptance, all within earshot of the front door. **Why it caught on:** the picture shows a skeleton sitting on a wooden bench in front of a grassy bank, one arm resting along the back, looking like it has been there a very long time. It was captioned "still waiting" and spread because the joke needs no setup: anything that takes too long, from a game update to a phone call, can be dated by how far the waiting has gone.
