MAYBE YOU JUST DON'T / APPRECIATE OUR HUMOR
A Sassy Black Woman post.
Someone in the group chat suggests "just winging it" for the holiday plans. Three days before departure, no hotel, no train times. A single raised finger would be enough. You just type "no" and wait for the replies. Your flatmate announces the washing-up "can wait till morning". It is a Tuesday. The pan has been soaking since Sunday and the water has developed a skin. A colleague says "no offence, but" and then offers feedback on your lunch. You put down your fork, raise one finger and let the silence do the rest of the meeting. Your uncle begins a sentence with "the thing about politics is". You have heard the thing about politics. You hold up one hand, he stops, and the whole table breathes out. **Why it caught on:** the picture is a studio shot of a woman against a pale background, one finger raised, a hand on her hip, lips pursed in disapproval. It spread through meme generators as a ready-made "now you listen to me" face, captioned with scoldings, mock sermons and political opinions. It also leaned on an old stereotype, the "sassy Black woman" of American film and television, shown as loud, quick-tongued and always ready to put someone in their place.
