must hide / people are trying to kill me
A Justin Bieber post.
You create an account for a gym you will visit twice. The site says your password is too short, so you add a "1". Then it wants a capital letter and a symbol. By the end it is a small novel, and you have already forgotten it. Your friend has been in a relationship for eight months. He still sends you a song at midnight about wanting someone to be his, as if the paperwork had never gone through. You listen anyway. You even hum it on the bus. A page you follow posts, "Every like and I'll do something ridiculous." You can see the number of likes, and you can see what it costs the poster. You scroll on, because it was never going to be dignified. Someone's profile picture is still from 2010, fringe and all. Nobody mentions it, and everybody knows. **Why it caught on:** the meme is named after the Canadian pop singer who became a teenage star around 2009 and 2010, and his swept fringe and boyish image made him an easy target for jokes. English captions teased him with puns on his songs and his passwords. Spanish-language versions turned the template into "for every like" shock bait, with crude and offensive punchlines, which is why so many of its most popular posts were mean rather than clever.
