Your manager explains there's no budget for a raise this year. Then the email arrives about the new branded hoodies and the team away day with a climbing wall. You read it twice and say nothing, which is the only polite option. A shop advertises "free delivery". The basket then politely asks for a minimum spend, a membership and your firstborn. Free is clearly a different word where they come from. Someone at the table says the new phone is "basically the same as the old one" and costs three times as much. Someone else says they're not sure they're allowed to feel their battery life is a personal failing. You fold your arms and keep listening. Your flatmate swears the washing-up was done. You are looking at a pan with last Tuesday's pasta in it, which is dried to the metal like fossil evidence. You let the silence do the work. **Why it caught on:** the photo shows a small boy in a striped shirt with his arms folded, giving a doubtful sideways look at a woman crouched beside him, and people began captioning it "So you're telling me..." in the early 2010s. The first wave leaned on a stereotype: a child in a poor country, unconvinced by the comforts and complaints of rich ones. It lasted because the face fits any claim that sounds too good, too silly or too convenient to be true.
