Someone asks a simple question at a gathering and you answer with a single word that has nothing to do with it. Everyone waits. You nod, as though that settled the matter. The takeaway arrives and you have already planned what to say about it, which is nothing. You open the box, look at the cookies and feel an odd tenderness towards the person who ordered them, who was you, earlier. You are partway through explaining something profound about water, or rather about a different, worse kind of water, when you realise nobody has asked. You carry on anyway, and the conviction is real. In the car you try to be subtle about the smell, turn the radio up, and believe the plan is flawless. Everyone else has already noticed. The music is just louder now. **Why it caught on:** the picture shows a young man with heavy-lidded eyes and a lopsided half-smile, and people captioned it as a permanently stoned character who delivers dim, confident non-sequiturs. It also circulated as 10 Guy. The stereotype behind it is the glassy-eyed, slow-moving stoner who mishears questions, gets hungry and mistakes nonsense for wisdom. It spread because the face fits any caption about a thought that made perfect sense at the time.
