There's Metho / To My Madness

Aboriginal meme: There's Metho / To My Madness

A Aboriginal post.

Christmas lunch. Your uncle starts with "now, this one's not PC". The table goes very quiet. Your nan, 91, asks him to pass the sprouts and not finish it. He finishes it. He laughs twice. Nobody else does once. The taxi driver asks where you're from, then shares his views on three entire peoples before the first set of lights. You give him one star and no tip. It feels, briefly, like activism. Someone forwards a "joke" to the work group chat with "lol don't shoot the messenger". Nobody shoots the messenger. HR rings the messenger. lol. At a barbecue, a man explains that one of the oldest living cultures on Earth "never invented anything". He then needs four goes and half a bottle of lighter fluid to start a fire. **Why it caught on:** the photo is an elderly Aboriginal Australian man, whose name isn't known, set on the colours of the Aboriginal flag, and the page was mostly racist stereotypes about Indigenous Australians. It spread the way those jokes always do, to rooms that laugh at a people instead of at a joke, and he never agreed to any of it.
