u write serial music? / watch out we got a badass over here
A AY SI post.
A colleague announces he's "basically fluent" after three weeks on a language app. Then a waiter replies in the language and he orders in English, slowly, with his hands. Someone at the pub says they're "so sociable", then spends the evening looking at their phone. They have 3,000 followers and have seen four of them this year, one of them by accident. He jumps the queue in the canteen, takes the last cookie and eats it in front of everyone. Somebody nearby, very flatly, says what everyone is thinking. Your cousin mentions he was "up all night", having gone to bed at 11. Your mate says he's "not even tired" while yawning into his pint. You nod and say "sure". **Why it caught on:** the picture is a black-and-white drawing of a man in a suit and tie with a moustache, both hands raised as if hugely impressed. It started with English captions about small acts of rebellion, such as "watch out, we got a bad ass over here", and Spanish speakers turned it into "ay sí", which is roughly "oh, sure". It spread because the gesture fits any boast that deserves a raised eyebrow, in either language.
