Call self retard as a joke / It's not actually a joke

A friend sends you a video with the message "you have to see this". You watch all ninety seconds, nod, and type "ha, brilliant". They reply with six crying faces. You have no idea what just happened. The whole group chat is howling at a phrase from a show you've never seen. You laugh a beat late, on purpose, so it looks like it landed. Nobody is fooled, but nobody says so. A colleague tells a story in the meeting and ends it with one word, delivered with total conviction. The room erupts. You smile and write "action points" on your notepad, as if that were the part you were here for. Somebody explains the joke, slowly, with a diagram. It gets worse. It turns out the joke was a pun, the pun only works in another language, and the other language is the only thing everyone else in the room has in common. **Why it caught on:** the picture shows a man mid-shout, laughing, on the standard blue advice-animal background. The captions were Russian wordplay on "язь", the name of a freshwater fish, which rhymes with "князь" (prince) and "мазь" (ointment). English-speaking visitors, baffled, filled the comments asking what it meant. That confusion became the joke, so the meme worked equally well whether you got it or not.
