The character is the stereotype of the basement-dwelling gamer - online all day, unbothered by sunlight, and easily offended. The real man is just someone whose photo got away from him. Captions mock a life lived entirely online. "Went outside" / "graphics are great, gameplay is boring." "Mum calls me for dinner" / "pause, 'just one more level.'" "Girl says hi" / "check if it's an achievement." Plenty go self-deprecating: people captioning their own weekends. The tone is as much "us" as "them". Most of the people posting him are writing from the very room the caption describes. **Why it caught on:** gamers were happy to laugh at their own stereotype, as long as they did the captioning.
