According to Know Your Meme, the macros may have started on Meme Generator itself in 2009, then spread through 4chan, Tumblr and Reddit. The duck is the relative who calls you about the computer. The top line is something he does with technology, the bottom line is how it goes wrong. "Googles Google" / "to get to Google." "Writes whole message" / "in the subject line." "Don't upload too many songs to my iPod" / "it'll get heavy." One classic post simply says "Top text" / "Bottom text", which is the most honest one of all. He installs every toolbar he's offered, believes every pop-up and forwards every chain email, just in case. He's not stupid. He's just very trusting, and the internet noticed. **Why it caught on:** everyone does tech support for someone, and the duck was a kinder way to complain about it.
