A cartoon bear that began on the Japanese message board 2channel as text art called Kuma ("bear"). On 4chan it became Pedobear, a mascot used to mock and flag creeps who show unwanted interest in children. The bear's job is to be a warning sign. When something online looks off - a suspicious ad, an adult acting strangely around kids - posters drop him in as an alarm bell. The joke is always on the creep, never on the children. Most uses are reaction images rather than captions: the bear dropped into a thread as a red flag beside something that should not be there, so everyone knows to steer clear and report it. His most famous moment came in February 2010, when the Polish newspaper Gazeta Olsztyńska printed a fan picture of the Vancouver Winter Olympics mascots - not noticing Pedobear standing among them. Always check your image search. **Why it caught on:** it gave the internet a quick, cartoon way to say "this is creepy" and shame the person responsible.
