You go through them like a detective, muting each in turn, until silence is restored and you have forgotten what you were doing. It's your cousin's birthday, and you remember at 11:58 p.m. The card is late, the message is not. You type "happy birthday" with the quiet intensity of a man with a very particular set of skills. **Why it caught on:** the picture shows a man in a dark jumper with a phone pressed to his ear and a grim, worried face, taken from a thriller in which a father threatens the kidnappers of his daughter over the phone. The speech about having "a very particular set of skills" was already famous, and people kept the stern phone-call format and swapped the menace for something petty: coffee thieves, sound ads and forgotten birthdays. The bigger the threat, the smaller the offence, and the funnier it got.
